First, let’s start with what’s not changing for the 2020 model year, which is the powertrain. After all, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it!
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner will return with a 4.0L V6 engine that generates an impressive 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. It pairs this with a 5-speed Electronically Controlled automatic Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i). It also includes a sequential shift mode that gives you the ability to shift on-command.
Of course, you’ll also get your pick among three drivetrains:
When all is said and done, this powertrain is expected to tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.
One big change that the 2020 Toyota 4Runner is expected to make involves smart safety features. This will really help to modernize the popular SUV, which will now come standard with the Toyota Safety Sense™ suite of driver-assist technologies.
This suite includes several technologies, like:
It’s also expected to feature Automatic High Beams. These automatically toggle your high beams on and off for you while traveling along dark back roads based on the flow of oncoming cars and other traffic signals. This way, you can focus your attention on driving instead of adjusting your high beams.
In addition to adding safety tech, the 2020 4Runner will include more infotainment technology upgrades. For example, it’ll have an available 8-inch touch-screen display in the center stack. This is compatible with Android Auto™ or Apple CarPlay®.
These two features allow you to fully integrate your smartphone with your infotainment system and access some of your favorite apps via your touchscreen display. Compatible apps include:
The interior will still be as sizable as previous generations and feature a 5-passenger seating capacity. With the optional third row, your seating capacity increases to seven in total, including the driver.
Your cargo area will also still be able to accommodate everything you need, including nine cubic feet of trunk space behind the third row. Additionally, you’ll have 46.3 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 88.8 cubic feet of total cargo volume when both rear seats are folded down flat.
